Public Relations Director, Beauty

Remote (U.S.) | Preference for LA, Denver, or NYC | Occasional travel
Six One Agency is a women-owned PR + communications agency working with beauty, wellness, and lifestyle brands - especially in the multicultural market. We’re looking for a Director, Communications + Growth to lead a focused portfolio of clients: setting strategy, driving earned media momentum, guiding creator/talent activations, and mentoring a small team.
This role also includes a relationship-led growth mandate - networking, pipeline development, and supporting pitches alongside the CEO (this is not a high-volume SDR role).
What You’ll Own
Client leadership + strategy
- Serve as the senior day-to-day lead on priority accounts: run calls, guide priorities, and keep work moving with confidence and clarity.
- Build communications strategies that connect brand positioning, culture, and business goals.
- Develop narrative architecture: messaging, story angles, spokesperson POVs, and campaign hooks.
Earned media + visibility
- Lead earned media strategy and pitching across consumer, trade, and business outlets.
- Create an always-on story pipeline (not just launch spikes), with smart “pulses” throughout the year.
- Write and oversee press releases, briefing docs, interview prep, talking points, and thoughtful recaps.
Team leadership + quality
- Mentor and guide team members; set clear expectations and provide consistent, constructive feedback.
- Raise the bar for writing, pitching, responsiveness, and overall output.
- Improve workflow health: clear briefs, clean delegation, fewer surprises.
Growth + new business (relationship-led, not spammy)
- Drive new business pipeline by identifying and cultivating qualified opportunities aligned with our sweet spot (beauty, wellness, lifestyle).
- Represent Six One externally through intentional networking: attend select summits, conferences, and industry events to build relationships and visibility.
- Partner with the CEO on pitches and growth: contribute POV, strategy, and follow-up that helps opportunities move forward.
- Use a CRM with discipline to track outreach, nurture leads, and maintain a clear pipeline.
Eligible for a quarterly new business bonus tied to:
- Qualified pipeline creation (intros, discovery calls, proposals that match our target client profile), and
- Closed-won revenue sourced by this role, paid on collected fees.
Targets and the bonus structure are set collaboratively based on client capacity and growth goals. This is a high-trust role with real ownership.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 9 years of experience in PR/communications (preferably agency-side), with experience across paid and earned talent/creator activations and multi-category brand work.
- Exceptional writing, communication, and presentation skills—able to clearly articulate strategy and creative ideas to clients and internal leadership.
- Curious and forward-thinking, with an eagerness to learn and adapt as AI and emerging technologies evolve; comfortable exploring tools and turning them into practical value for teams and clients.
- Strong relationship-building skills; able to build rapport with clients, talent, and partners, maintaining trusted working relationships internally and externally.
- Proven people leader with the ability to mentor and develop junior team members and give clear, supportive feedback.
- Independent, hands-on operator with a steady pulse on influencer marketing trends, cultural shifts, and industry changes.
- This is a high-trust role with real ownership. You’ll have direct access to the CEO, the space to lead clients end-to-end, and the ability to shape how we work as we grow.
Compensation + Benefits
- Base salary: $120,000–$135,000 (DOE)
